DHI (Pen Technique)

DHI (Pen Technique)

Dense, directional implantation.

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is a transplant technique in which follicles harvested by FUE are placed with a Choi implanter pen that opens the channel and implants the graft in a single movement. Grafts spend less time outside the body and their angle and depth are controlled precisely, giving a particularly natural, dense result for hairlines and densification.

With the no-shave option you can have the procedure without cutting your existing hair or interrupting your social life.

Benefits

  • No-shave option: only a small area at the back is shaved and hidden by the hair above.
  • Denser packing: 40–50 grafts per cm² with the pen tip for natural density at the hairline.
  • Less trauma to grafts: shorter time outside the body increases survival rates.
  • Angle and direction control: the angle and depth of every graft are set individually with the implanter.
  • Faster healing: with no separate channel-opening stage there is less bleeding and scabbing.

The process step by step

  1. Online analysis: suitability for DHI, graft count and price from your photos within 24 hours.
  2. Day 1 — consultation and design: blood tests, hairline design and donor-area planning.
  3. Day 2 — procedure (6–9 hours): local anaesthesia; grafts harvested one by one with a micro-motor, loaded into implanter pens and placed directly by the implantation team.
  4. Day 3 — check-up and first wash: wash at the clinic, care kit and written instructions; PRP application.
  5. Follow-up: scabs fall off by day 10; growth from month 3; full result at 12 months. Online follow-up with monthly photos.

Who is it for?

Ideal for restoring the hairline, densifying thinning areas or having a transplant without cutting your hair. It gives the best results in moderate hair loss (Norwood 2–4) up to 2,500–3,500 grafts; for very large areas it can be combined with Sapphire FUE. Sufficient donor density is essential.

Frequently asked questions

DHI or Sapphire FUE?

DHI excels for hairlines, densification and no-shave requests; Sapphire FUE has the advantage for higher graft numbers in one session. At the consultation we recommend one or a combination based on your pattern of loss.

Is no-shave DHI possible for everyone?

It suits patients whose hair is long enough to hide the shaved donor strip and who need fewer than 3,000 grafts.

Are fewer grafts placed with DHI?

Typically 2,500–4,000 grafts in one session. If more are needed, two sessions or a combined technique are planned.

Is recovery different from FUE?

Scabbing and redness are slightly less; scabs fall off within 7–10 days. The result timeline is the same: growth at month 3, full result at 12 months.
